Gold Fields’ Charlene Wrigley to Spotlight ESG Strategy at AMW 2025

Gold Fields’ Charlene Wrigley to Spotlight ESG Strategy at AMW 2025
Charlene Wrigley, Vice President of Sustainability Strategy and Disclosures at Gold Fields, will speak at the upcoming African Mining Week (AMW) - Africa’s premier gathering for mining stakeholders, taking place in Cape Town from October 1–3, 2025.

Wrigley will feature on the ESG Standards and Driving Industry-Wide Adoption panel, highlighting how African mining projects are advancing environmental sustainability, worker safety and community development.

AMW presents an ideal platform for Wrigley to showcase Gold Fields’ ESG strategy, which includes ambitious targets to achieve 80% water recycling by 2030, a 30% female workforce by 2030 and net zero by 2050.

In Ghana - where the company operates the Damang Mine and Tarkwa Mine, Africa’s largest open-pit gold mine – Gold Fields has converted former tailings storage facilities into fertile agricultural land for community farming, creating jobs and enhancing food security. The company has also invested in the tar surfacing of the Tarkwa-Damang road and the refurbishment of the TnA football stadium.

In South Africa, the firm operates the South Deep Mine, one of the world’s deepest mines. The company is leveraging the 50 MW Khanyisa Solar PV plant at South Deep to meet 20% of the mine’s electricity demand, cutting energy bills by R150 million and emissions by 110,000 tons. The mine also recycles 78% of its water, cutting reliance on municipal supply and enhancing water conservation. Gold Fields has further invested $3.7 million in community initiatives, while promoting inclusive employment – with 63% of workers hired locally and 27% being women.

AMW 2025 will also serve as a platform for Wrigley to showcase how African projects are driving Gold Fields’ global growth strategy, which aims to raise annual production to between two and three million ounces over the next decade. In April 2025, the company renewed its license for the Damang Mine with Ghana’s government, extending operations by 12 months to unlock untapped resources. Wrigley is also expected to highlight the company’s other strategic initiatives that align with Ghana’s gold production increase agenda and South Africa’s drive to revitalize its gold industry.

African Mining Week serves as a premier platform for exploring the full spectrum of mining opportunities across Africa. The event is held alongside the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2025 conference from October 1-3 in Cape Town.
