Ethiopia Expands Coal Reserves to Over 1 Billion Tons
Ethiopia has expanded its coal reserves to over 1 billion tons through increased investments and strategic partnerships with global exploration firms, according to Bisrat Kebede, General Director at the Mineral Industry Development Institute, Ministry of Mines, Ethiopia.

In an exclusive interview with African Mining Week, Kebede said the country is looking for new investors to maximize the coal industry’s revenue generation and economic growth potential.

“We have significant coal potential in Ethiopia due to tectonic movements, resulting in unexplored coal fields with promising opportunities. We are seeking reliable global partners to invest in these resources,” Kebede stated.

Ethiopia is offering incentives such as duty-free importation of mining equipment to create a conducive environment for global investors, according to Kebede. He said the country is open to new ventures to unlock its full geological potential, particularly in critical minerals.

“One of the world’s most renowned mineral belts passes through Ethiopia’s eastern and northern regions, positioning the country as a future producer of gold, nickel, tantalum, cobalt, copper and base metals,” Kebede concluded.
