Diamonds and Beyond: Botswana Gears Up for African Mining Week 2025

Diamonds and Beyond: Botswana Gears Up for African Mining Week 2025
As Botswana ramps up efforts to grow its diamond production and diversify into critical minerals, the upcoming African Mining Week (AMW) – Africa’s premier platform for mining investment, scheduled for October 1–3, 2025 in Cape Town – will spotlight the country’s evolving mining landscape and investment opportunities.

A key highlight of the event will be a dedicated panel discussion, “Botswana’s Diamond Legacy: Transforming Resources into Sustainable Growth and Global Leadership,” which will explore how Botswana is strengthening its diamond value chain while unlocking new opportunities across its broader mineral sector.

As the world’s largest diamond producer, Botswana is taking strategic steps to benefit from a projected rebound in the global diamond market. The country’s economy is forecast to grow by 3.3% in 2025, driven in large part by a recovery in diamond demand. In February 2025, Botswana signed a landmark sales agreement with De Beers, doubling its share of diamond sales from 25% to 50% and extending their joint venture license until 2054 – ensuring long-term revenues from diamond mining.

The momentum continued in January 2025, when Botswana extended two prospecting licenses held by Botswana Diamonds, enabling the company to advance AI-driven exploration initiatives and identify untapped diamond resources. In a move to enhance global trust and compliance, Botswana partnered with the G7 in November 2024 to establish a rough diamond export certification point, reinforcing transparency in the diamond trade. These developments will be center stage at AMW 2025, which will connect Botswana’s mining leadership and project developers with global investors and technical partners, creating a space for deal signing and partnership formation.

Botswana is also emerging as a critical mineral hub. Over the past five years, the country has launched five new base metal mines and is actively attracting global exploration and production partners. In April 2025, Canada’s Premium Resources began a six-month exploration campaign for new copper and nickel reserves at the Selebi North and Selebi Main projects. Australia’s Lotus Resources is advancing the Letlhakane Uranium Project, which confirmed economic viability in March 2025 to produce up to 3 million pounds of uranium annually. Mining giant BHP expanded its footprint by acquiring stakes in the Kitlanya East and West copper-nickel projects, signaling confidence in Botswana’s critical minerals potential. Meanwhile, Botswana Diamonds, leveraging AI-driven geological modeling, announced new exploration targets in gold, copper, and platinum group metals in December 2024.

Against this backdrop of growth and diversification, AMW 2025 offers a timely and strategic platform for Botswana to engage global capital providers and unlock its next chapter of mineral-led industrial development.

African Mining Week serves as a premier platform for exploring the full spectrum of mining opportunities across Africa. The event is held alongside the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2025 conference from October 1-3 in Cape Town.
