)
A key highlight will be a strategic panel on Ghana’s Gold Renaissance: Refining and Innovation, Enhancing the Nation’s Golden Potential. This session will explore the country’s policies and programs aimed at strengthening its gold sector and maintaining its position as Africa’s largest producer and the world’s sixth-largest. A significant development is the launch of the Ghana Gold Board on May 1, 2025, which will regulate official gold trading, address illegal trading and maximize the sector’s economic contribution. Additionally, Ghana is advancing the Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project to formalize its artisanal and small-scale mining sector, which supports over one million people and contributed over $5 billion in gold export revenue in 2024.
The Unlocking Value: Scaling Up Gold Refining and Processing in Africa panel will discuss Africa’s local beneficiation efforts and GDP growth driven by infrastructure investments and international collaboration. Angola, for example, is nearing completion of a $7 million gold refinery in Viana, Luanda, with a daily capacity of 25 kgs, set to open in 2025. Kenya is advancing its plans for the Kakamega Gold Refinery, and Zimbabwe’s Betterbrands is planning a new refinery in Bulawayo. Ghana and Burkina Faso launched their first national refineries in 2024.
In addition, the Future of Gold: Predicting Prices and Managing Market Volatility panel will address how African producers are responding to global price fluctuations while developing local markets for resource monetization. In 2024, Ghana saw a surge in gold exports, with other African countries such as South Africa, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Togo and Mali emerging as top importers.
African Mining Week serves as the ideal platform for global investors to tap into Africa’s expanding gold sector. With high-potential projects like Cardinal Namdini and Ahafo North in Ghana, Loulo-Gounkoto in Mali, Kibali in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tasiast in Mauritania, the continent is poised for unprecedented growth. As Africa continues to strengthen its position as a global gold producer, the summit will offer exclusive opportunities for collaboration, investment and strategic partnerships.
African Mining Week serves as a premier platform for exploring the full spectrum of mining opportunities across Africa. The event is held alongside the African Energy Week: Invest in African Energies 2025 conference from October 1-3 in Cape Town.
